The competition to design the outdoor facilities at the Schöfferstraße campus has been finalised: The jury has selected the three most convincing concepts, one of which will form the basis for the redesign. The aim is to improve the quality of stay for students and employees. ‘We are developing our central campus into a green campus,’ says Chancellor Dr Thomas Bartnitzki. ‘More trees and green islands contribute to climate adaptation. Purposefully designed green spaces with more places to sit and relax will make our campus even more of a place where people enjoy spending time or learning together.’
The competition, which was launched in autumn 2023, was aimed at interdisciplinary working groups consisting of landscape architecture firms and artists. A total of 15 teams from Germany and abroad submitted their designs. The next step will now be to negotiate with the three prizewinners about commissioning and realisation. Construction is expected to begin in 2028 and the project will be financed by HEUREKA funds from the state of Hesse. In the first construction phase, around 14,000 square metres of the total area of around 80,000 square metres will be redesigned and the art-in-architecture measure implemented. The cost estimate for this is around 5 million euros.
The team from Atelier Loidl Landschaftsarchitekten (Berlin) with the artist Martin Binder (Berlin) emerged as the winner of the competition. Second prize went to the team from Klaus + Salzberger Landschaftsarchitekten (Eching in Lower Bavaria) and Studioniemeyer (Munich). Third prize went to the design by Planorama GmbH (Berlin) and Stefan Sous, Meisterschüler (Düsseldorf). The illustration shows a view of the first prize-winning design.
