Bahnbrechende Nachrichten aus Brüssel: Am Montagnachmittag hat die EU-Kommission bekannt gegeben, dass die h_da und ihre sieben Partner es mit der European University of Technology (EUt+) in die zweite Förderrunde geschafft haben. Sie startet am 1. November 2023 und wird vier Jahre umfassen. Für diesen Zeitraum erhält die Hochschulallianz rund 14,5 Millionen Euro an Fördergeldern. Davon entfallen gut 1,4 Millionen Euro auf die h_da, die daraus an erster Stelle Mobilität und zusätzliche Stellen finanzieren möchte.

Mit 96 von 100 Punkten stellte die EU-Kommission dem Förderantrag von EUt+ Bestnoten aus. Als besondere Stärke hoben die Gutachter*innen den erkennbaren Willen hervor, eine europäische Universität neuen Typs zu gründen mit dem Ziel, langfristig zu einer Entität zu verschmelzen. „Der Sprung in die zweite Runde ist ein großartiger Erfolg“, so h_da-Präsident Prof. Dr. Arnd Steinmetz. „Unsere Vision, eine wirklich europäische Hochschule zu werden – mit Campussen von West- bis Osteuropa – unterscheidet uns von anderen Allianzen und macht uns einzigartig.“

Bei einem Kickoff-Treffen zu Phase II am Mittwoch erläuterte Präsident Steinmetz die Pläne für die nächsten Jahre: „In der zweiten Runde kommt ein neuer Partner hinzu.“ Mit dem Arbeitsprogramm für 2024 – 2027 haben die dann neun Partner eine ganze Reihe „dicker Bretter“ vor sich: Mobilitätsformate sollen ausgeweitet, die Arbeit an gemeinsamen Abschlüssen u.a. in den Ingenieurstudiengängen intensiviert und eine EUt+-Forschungsstrategie erarbeitet werden. Auch eine gemeinsame IT-Infrastruktur soll entstehen, ebenso ein juristisches Rahmenwerk für die Hochschulallianz.

Für alle Hochschulangehörigen heißt das: Es gibt viel zu tun, aber auch viel zu erleben. Die Staff Mobility wird in den nächsten Jahren gestärkt. Wissenschaftliche wie administrative Beschäftigte sollen die Möglichkeit haben, unsere Partnerhochschulen zu besuchen – wie beispielsweise die Beschäftigten der Finanzbuchhaltung bereits im April 2023 bei der „Staff Week“ in Riga. Das erfolgreich begonnene Fremdsprachenprogramm für Beschäftigte soll zudem fortgeführt und ausgebaut werden.

Und natürlich wird es für die Studierenden noch einfacher, Zeit an einer EUt+-Partneruni zu verbringen. Neben den klassischen Auslandsaufenthalten von einem Semester werden künftig mehr alternative Formate wie kurze Workshops im Ausland oder Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP) möglich sein. Vom 26.6. bis 30.6.2023 war am Fachbereich Maschinenbau und Kunststofftechnik zu „besichtigen“, was EUt+ ganz praktisch bedeutet: Junge Leute aus Darmstadt, Troyes, Cluj und Riga sowie Studierende der Technischen Hochschule Mittelhessen arbeiteten eine Woche lang gemeinsam im Labor, besuchten Kooperationspartner der h_da aus Wirtschaft und Wissenschaft, erkundeten Darmstadt und lernten das Rhein-Main-Gebiet kennen. Sie alle sind Teilnehmende des ersten „Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programmes“ im Rahmen von EUt+:  Die Lehrveranstaltung zum Thema „Material Modelling – Testing and Parameter Identification“ findet unter der Leitung von Professorin Brita Pyttel (FB MK) und Professor Thomas Pyttel (THM) seit Ende März einmal pro Woche online statt, unterstützt vom International Office.

Die Präsenzwoche in Darmstadt war der Höhepunkt der EUt+-Lehrveranstaltung: Rund 25 Bachelor-, Master- und PhD-Studierende aus vier Ländern waren vor Ort. Sie erhalten nach Abschluss 5 ECTS – und äußerten sich begeistert über die unkomplizierte Möglichkeit, Auslandserfahrung zu sammeln und den fachlichen Horizont zu erweitern. Als besonders positiv hoben die Teilnehmenden den starken Praxisbezug der Lehre an der h_da und die Einbeziehung digitaler Methoden hervor. „Das ist die Zukunft des Maschinenbaus“, lautete die Bilanz eines Teilnehmers.

Professor Matthias Vieth vom Fachbereich Wirtschaft begrüßte die Gruppe und ihre Dozent*innen an der h_da. Die EUt+-Lehrveranstaltung sei ein hervorragendes Beispiel dafür, was möglich sei, wenn Hochschulen intensiv zusammenarbeiteten, betonte der künftige h_da-Vizepräsident für Studium, Lehre und studentische Angelegenheiten. „Dies ist ein Beitrag zur Idee der europäischen Integration – sozial, ökonomisch wie akademisch.“ - Einen ausführlichen Artikel finden Sie im h_da-Wissenschaftsmagazin impact. Vom 23.10. bis 20.11.2023 findet die Wahl der DFG-Fachkollegien statt: Alle vier Jahre entscheiden bundesweit rund 150.000 Wahlberechtigte, wer in den Fachkollegien der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft mitwirken darf. Für jedes Fach gibt es mindestens zwei Vertreter*innen, die Forschungsanträge begutachten und über die Bewilligung von Fördermitteln entscheiden. Etwa 400 Mitglieder unserer Hochschule sind wahlberechtigt: sämtliche Professor*innen sowie alle aktiv forschenden, promovierten Wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiter*innen und promovierte Lehrkräfte für besondere Aufgaben (LfbAs).

Durch eine Teilnahme an der Wahl haben auch wir als Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften die Möglichkeit, Einfluss auf die Zusammensetzung der Fachkollegien und somit indirekt auf die Forschungsförderung der DFG zu nehmen. Wir möchten Sie deshalb ermuntern, sich zu beteiligten. Die interne Organisation und Koordination der Wahl an der h_da liegt bei der Stabsstelle Wahlamt (Christine Willems), die die Wahlunterlagen ab Ende September über die Fachbereiche bzw. Abteilungen an alle Wahlberechtigten ausgibt. In den Unterlagen (in Papierform) finden Sie dann die Zugangsdaten für die Online-Wahl inklusive Link zur Stimmabgabe. Das Anforderungsprofil in den Hochschulsekretariaten hat sich in den letzten Jahren gewandelt – vom Sekretariat zur Mitarbeit im Wissenschaftsmanagement. Um Beschäftigte mit Sekretariatsaufgaben dabei zu unterstützen, hat die Abteilung Personal- und Organisationsentwicklung das Fachnetzwerk „net_sek“ ins Leben gerufen und lädt am 12. Juli 2023 von 10:30 Uhr bis 12:00 Uhr im Hörsaal B15 / 00.01 am Campus Darmstadt zum Kick-off ein. „net_sek“ soll h_da-intern einen professionellen Austausch ermöglichen und durch fachspezifische Angebote zur Weiterentwicklung und Professionalisierung beitragen.

Das Netzwerk basiert auf vier Säulen: regelmäßige Treffen zum persönlichen Austausch, passgenaue Weiterbildungsangebote, ein Patensystem für ein effizientes Onboarding sowie eine Intranetseite mit allgemeinen Informationen und praktischen Arbeitshilfen. Bundesweit existiert bereits eine Vielzahl von Sekretariatsnetzwerken an Hochschulen. Durch die Einführung von „net_sek“ wird nun auch an der h_da für Mitarbeitende in den Sekretariaten ein systematisches Personalentwicklungsangebot eingeführt. Zum Kick-off sind alle Kolleginnen und Kollegen aus den Sekretariaten und – zum ersten Teil der Veranstaltung – auch alle Führungskräfte eingeladen. Details finden Sie auf der POE-Intranetseite.

Wir haben Fragen an Sie! Im Zuge der baulichen Weiterentwicklung des Campus Schöfferstraße möchte die h_da die Außenanlagen neu gestalten. Ziel ist eine bessere Aufenthaltsqualität und eine nachhaltige, klimagerechte Bau- und Betriebsphase. Im Sommer 2023 startet hierfür ein Ideenwettbewerb mit Realisierungsteil und integriertem Kunstwettbewerb. Er wird aus dem Landesinvestitionsprogramm HEUREKA finanziert, die Federführung liegt beim Landesbetrieb Bau und Immobilien Hessen.

Und jetzt kommen Sie ins Spiel: Aktuell arbeitet die h_da die Formulierung der konkreten Aufgabenstellung für den Wettbewerb aus. Alle Hochschulangehörigen können hierzu Vorschläge äußern: Das Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement der h_da hat gemeinsam mit Bau und Liegenschaften eine Umfrage erstellt, um die Hochschulöffentlichkeit in die Planung einzubeziehen. Sie können bis zum 30. Juli daran teilnehmen und uns Ihre Ideen mitteilen. Das heißt nicht, dass alle Vorschläge umgesetzt werden können. Ihre Wünsche werden uns aber dabei helfen, die Aufgabenstellung für die Wettbewerbsteilnehmer im Sinne der gesamten Hochschule zu formulieren.

Rund 3.000 Menschen feierten am 15. Juni bei perfektem Sommerwetter auf dem Campus Schöfferstraße: Das h_da-Campusfestival war, wie schon das Jubiläumsfestival im Vorjahr, ein großer Erfolg.  Vier Live-Acts spielten auf der Festivalbühne, Open-Air-DJs verwandelten den Platz vor dem Studierendenhaus in eine Tanzfläche und der Hochschulsport sorgte mit Volleyball und Spikeball für Sportangebote. Great news from Brussels! On Monday afternoon the European Commission announced that the h_da and its seven partners in the European University of Technology (EUt+) have made it into the second round of funding, which will run for four years from 1 November 2023. The EUt+ university alliance will receive approx. 14.5 million euros for this period. Over 1.4 million euros is earmarked for the h_da, which intends to use the money primarily to finance mobility and additional appointments.

The European Commission awarded the EUt+’s funding application top marks, i.e. 96 out of 100 points. The assessors emphasised as a special strength the evident will to found a new type of European university with the long-term aim of merging into a single entity. “Making it into the second round is a wonderful achievement,” said h_da President Prof. Arnd Steinmetz. “Our vision of becoming a truly European university – with campuses across Europe from East to West – sets us apart from other alliances and makes us unique.”

At a kick-off meeting for Phase II on Wednesday, President Steinmetz described the plans for the coming years. “A new partner will join in the second round,” he said. The work programme for 2024 to 2027 will give the nine partners a whole series of “major jobs” to do. They will expand the mobility formats, intensify their work on common qualifications such as engineering degrees, and elaborate an EUt+ research strategy. A shared IT infrastructure will also be created, plus a legal framework for the university alliance.

This means that all members of the university have a lot to do, but there is also a lot they can experience themselves. Staff mobility will be improved over the coming years. Academic and administrative staff will be able to visit our partner universities – via schemes similar to the Staff Week in Riga in April 2023 for employees in financial accounting. The successfully launched foreign language programme for staff members will also be continued with a broader scope.

And of course it will become simpler for students to spend time at an EUt+ partner university. In addition to the classical stays lasting one semester, in future there will be more alternative formats such as short workshops in other countries and Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP). From 26 to 30 June 2023, the Department of Mechanical and Plastics Engineering (FB MK) demonstrated what the EUt+ means in practical terms. Students from Darmstadt, Troyes, Cluj and Riga, and from the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM), spent a week working together in laboratories, visiting the h_da’s cooperation partners in industry and research, and exploring both Darmstadt and the surrounding Rhine-Main area. All of them were taking part in the first “Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme” at the EUt+. The weekly online classes on “Material modelling – testing and parameter identification” started at the end of March, headed by Professor Brita Pyttel (FB MK) and Professor Thomas Pyttel (THM) and supported by the International Office.

The week of face-to-face activities in Darmstadt was the highlight of the EUt+ course, attended by around 25 Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD students from four countries. Upon completion, the students gain 5 ECTS credits. They were very pleased with this straightforward way of obtaining foreign experience and expanding their technical horizons. The participants stressed the great practical relevance of the classes at the h_da and the inclusion of digital methods. “That’s the future of mechanical engineering,” one student stated with confidence.

Professor Matthias Vieth from the Darmstadt Business School (and future h_da Vice President for Teaching, Learning and Collegiate Affairs) welcomed the group and their lecturers to the h_da as an outstanding example of what is possible when universities engage in intensive cooperation. “This is a social, economic and academic contribution to the idea of European integration.” You can find a detailed article in the h_da’s magazine for science and art, “impact” (in German, English version will follow next week). The elections to the DFG review boards will take place from 23 October to 20 November 2023. Every four years, around 150,000 voters take part in nationwide elections to determine who will sit on the review boards of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Science Foundation). There are at least two representatives for each subject area who review research proposals and decide whether the applications for funding are approved or not. Approximately 400 members of our university are entitled to vote: all professors and all staff members with a doctorate who are actively involved in research, and teaching staff (with a doctorate) for special tasks (known as “LfbA”).

Participating in the elections enables Darmstadt University for Applied Sciences to influence the composition of the review boards, and thus indirectly also the DFG’s research funding. We therefore wish to encourage you to take part. The h_da’s Election Office (Christine Willems) takes care of the internal organisation and coordination of the elections, and will issue the relevant documents to all those entitled to vote in 2023 via the faculties or departments from the end of September onwards. The election documents (in paper form) contain your access data for the online election, including the link for casting your votes. The profiles of university secretariats have evolved somewhat in recent years – in addition to secretarial activities they are now increasingly involved in research management. To support employees with secretarial functions, the Department of Human Resources and Organisational Development has set up the network “net_sek”, and staff are invited to the launch on 12 July 2023, from 10:30 h to 12:00 h in Room B15 / 00.01 on the Darmstadt Campus. The network will enable information to be shared within the h_da and provide subject-specific offers that contribute to ongoing development and professionalisation.

The network is based on four pillars: regular meetings for face-to-face discussion, customised training courses, a mentoring system for efficient onboarding, and an intranet page offering general information and practical working aids. A large number of secretariat networks already exist at universities up and down the country. The introduction of “net_sek” now represents the advent of systematic human resource development services for employees in the secretariats at the h_da. All secretariat staff members are invited to the launch, and all managerial staff are also invited to the first part of the event. You can find more details on the POE intranet page (in German).

We want to ask you some questions! The h_da wishes to redesign the outdoor parts of the Schöfferstrasse Campus during the planned building project. The aim is to make the campus a more pleasant place, and to ensure that the construction work on the site and its subsequent operation are sustainable and climate-friendly. To this end, an ideas competition will start in summer 2023 with a realisation section and an integrated art competition. It will be financed by HEUREKA, the Hessian higher education investment programme under the aegis of the company Landesbetrieb Bau und Immobilien Hessen.

And this is where you come in: at present the h_da is setting the specific task for entrants to the competition. All members of the university are invited to submit their proposals. The h_da’s sustainability management has prepared a survey in cooperation with the Facility Management Department to include everyone at the h_da in the planning. You have until 30 July to complete the survey and give us your ideas. This does not mean that all the proposals can be realised, but your input will help us to formulate a task for competition participants that reflects the wishes of the entire university. Around 3,000 people joined the party on the Schöfferstrasse Campus on 15 June. The perfect summer weather helped to make the h_da campus festival a resounding success, just like the anniversary festival last year. Four live acts played on the festival stage, open-air DJs enticed people onto the dance floor in front of the Studierendenhaus, and representatives of the University Sports encouraged partygoers to try their hand at volleyball and spikeball.
