Anfang Oktober hat das „ATHENE Usable Security and Privacy Lab“ (USP Lab) an der h_da seine Arbeit aufgenommen. Das Labor wird von der Arbeitsgruppe User-Centered Security betrieben und vom Nationalen Forschungszentrum für angewandte Cybersicherheit ATHENE unterstützt. Forschende und Studierende der h_da können das Labor für Projekte und Studien zur Gebrauchstauglichkeit und Benutzerfreundlichkeit von sicherheits- wie datenschutzrelevanten Technologien nutzen. Im Fokus stehen dabei Fragestellungen, wie Sicherheits- und Datenschutztechnologien so gestaltet werden können, dass sie Nutzerinnen und Nutzer dabei unterstützen, informierte Entscheidungen zu treffen und persönliche Daten wirksam zu schützen. Dazu gehören etwa die verständliche Darstellung von Datenschutzrichtlinien oder transparente Cookie-Banner, die offen erläutern, welche Daten in welcher Form bei der Nutzung einer Anwendung verarbeitet werden. Auch Untersuchungen zum Nutzerverhalten sind von großem Interesse, etwa hinsichtlich des Vertrauens in KI-Tools und möglicherweise preisgegebene Daten.

Das USP-Lab verfügt über umfassende technische Voraussetzungen und bietet methodische Unterstützung, um derartige Fragestellungen zu untersuchen – beispielsweise durch Usability-Tests am PC oder Handy, User-Interviews, Umfragen, Eye-Tracking und vieles mehr. Das Labor befindet sich in Gebäude D19, Raum 02.12 und steht auch für Lehrveranstaltungen zur Verfügung. Auch Forschende, die nicht Mitglied von ATHENE sind, können die Nutzung jederzeit anfragen. Auf der Labor-Website finden Sie zudem ausführliche Erläuterungen und Anleitungen. Bei Bedarf unterstützt Sie das Team gerne mit einer individuellen Methodenberatung. Die Mensa am Campus Dieburg wurde in den vergangenen Monaten umgebaut und wird der Hochschulöffentlichkeit am Mittwoch, 12. November 2025, mit ihren neuen Funktionen und Nutzungsmöglichkeiten vorgestellt.

Das Saal ist nun in drei Bereiche unterteilt: Im Gastronomiebereich findet in den Kernzeiten weiterhin der „klassische“ Mensabetrieb statt, Speise- und Getränkeautomaten gewährleisten die Versorgung in den Randzeiten. Eine modulare Ausstellungs- und Veranstaltungsfläche mit Bühne bietet Raum für Ausstellungen und Präsentationen von Studierenden und Studiengängen, zudem kann die Fläche für Events genutzt werden. Hinzu kommen Lern– und Aufenthaltsbereiche für Gruppenarbeit wie auch Einzelarbeitsplätze.

Der Umbau ermöglicht eine bessere Nutzung des großen Gebäudes am denkmalgeschützten Campus Dieburg. Die Feier zum „Relaunch“ mit Musik und Gastronomie-Specials des Studierendenwerks am 12. November beginnt um 12.00 Uhr. Eine separate Einladung erhalten Sie per Mail. 

Der Utopie Europa Preis 2025 geht an die h_da. Ein Studierenden-Team unserer Hochschule nahm am Dienstag, 23.9.2025, in der Französischen Botschaft in Berlin am bundesweiten Debattierwettbewerb „Utopie Europa“ teil und setzte sich gegen zwei weitere Teams durch. Im Wettbewerb zum Thema „Teilhabe und Engagement: der Jugend in Europa eine Stimme geben“ stellten die h_da-Studierenden das vom interdisziplinären Studienbereich Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaftlichen (SuK) initiierte EUT+-Projekt „Become a Member of the European Parliamant for one Day“ vor, das zu den Höhepunkten der EUT+ Darmstadt Week im Juni zählte. Die im Projekt erarbeiteten Ergebnisse in Form einer Resolution sollen nun im nächsten Schritt an ein Mitglied des Europäischen Parlaments übergeben werden.

Das Team der h_da bestand aus vier Studierenden: Anna Valerie Smeljanski (Master Media, Technology and Society), Alexander Stümpel (Bachelor Wirtschaftspsychologie) und Sofia Naumi mit vorbereitender Unterstützung von Anja Dinzinger (beide Bachelor Informationsrecht). Inhaltlich begleitet und gecoacht wurden sie von Prof. Dr. Anja Hentschel, Prof. Dr. Andreas Haidvogl (beide SuK) und Dorina Kaiser, Referentin von Präsident Prof. Dr. Arnd Steinmetz. Sie hatten bereits das Event in Darmstadt federführend organisiert.

Während der Debatte in Berlin erläuterten die h_da-Studierenden ihre Ideen, wurden von Moderatoren kritisch befragt und mussten darauf reagieren. Als besonders überzeugend hob die Jury das innovative Konzept, die interdisziplinäre und internationale Ausrichtung, die Verknüpfung von sozialwissenschaftlichen und MINT-Aspekten und den Perspektivwechsel hervor, der mit der Idee des EUT+-Projekts einherging. Trotz der herausfordernden Zeiten für uns als Hochschule steht die Nachhaltige Entwicklung an der h_da weiter im Fokus. Die in diesem Jahr neu gegründete ZOE Kompetenzzentrum Nachhaltige Entwicklung (KNE) unter der Leitung von Sonja Kleinod hat zum Ziel, die Hochschule im Sinne des „Whole Institution Approach“ zukunftsfähig weiterzuentwickeln – orientiert an Bedarf und Themen unserer Stakeholder. Hierbei unterstützen die Sachgebiete Bildung für Nachhaltige Entwicklung unter Leitung von Julia Landrock und das betriebliche Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement. Das bereits etablierte Green Office ist jetzt ebenfalls Teil des KNE.

Im neuen Green-Office-Raum im Foyer des Hochhauses am Campus Schöfferstraße möchten wir die Themen und Projekte der h_da im Themenfeld Nachhaltige Entwicklung sichtbar und erlebbar machen. Machen Sie sich gerne ein eigenes Bild und kommen Sie am 22. Oktober ab 16.00 Uhr zur Green-Office-Neueröffnung. Erleben Sie dort die unterschiedlichen Nutzungsmöglichkeiten des Raums und die Verleihung des pra:ne (Preis für nachhaltige Abschlussarbeiten) für die Jahrgänge 2024 und 2025. Ein Gallery Walk zeigt die Inhalte der ausgezeichneten Abschlussarbeiten. Darüber hinaus besteht die Gelegenheit, sich zu den Kerninhalten der ersten hochschulweiten Nachhaltigkeitsstrategie auszutauschen. Im Anschluss laden wir zu einem lockeren Networking ein. Ab sofort ist die Anmeldung für den Tag der Nachhaltigkeit am 24. November über die Webseite der Evangelischen Hochschule (EHD) möglich. Schwerpunkt in diesem Jahr: "Exploring Social Sustainability! Ökologie, Technik und Wirtschaft treffen Soziales". Gemeinsam sollen die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Ökologie, Technik, Wirtschaft und Sozialem mit Blick auf Nachhaltigkeit entdeckt und diskutiert werden. Auf einem Markt der Möglichkeiten sind zahlreiche Initiativen und Projekte der Kooperationspartner zum Netzwerken vertreten. Die konkrete Agenda mit den Vorträgen und Workshops finden Sie ab Mitte Oktober auf der Veranstaltungswebseite.

Sie können sich auf der Webseite der EHD mit Ihrer E-Mail-Adresse eintragen, um einen Reminder zum Tag inklusive Programm zu erhalten. Der Tag richtet sich an Studierende, Forschende aller Fachrichtungen, Akteure aus der Praxis, wie z.B. Vereine und Verbände der Zivilgesellschaft, Sozial- und Gesundheitswirtschaft, Wohlfahrtsverbände und kirchliche Einrichtungen. Die Veranstaltung findet erneut in Kooperation zwischen der Evangelischen Hochschule Darmstadt, der Technischen Universität Darmstadt, der Hessischen Landeszentrale für Politische Bildung, der Stiftung Forum für Verantwortung und der Hochschule Darmstadt statt.

Nach dem großen Erfolg der ersten beiden Lab Nights sind die Vorbereitungen für die dritte Ausgabe in vollem Gange: Am Donnerstag, 6. November, lädt der Fachbereich Bau- und Umweltingenieurwesen erneut in die zur wasserBARhalle „umfunktionierte“ Wasserbauhalle (B13) ein. Auf dem Programm stehen Kurzkonzerte mit Pianist Matthias Fenchel (Foto), der bei der ersten Ausgabe der Lab Nights für große Begeisterung sorgte, außerdem das junge Crossover-Duo KlaVio aus Wiesbaden (Klavier & Violine), ein Hornquartett aus Köln und Konzertgitarren. Anders als bei „konventionellen“ Klassik-Abenden stehen wir in der Wasserbauhalle direkt am Flügel, respektive um die Künstler herum – Klassik also mal ganz anders!

Organisiert wird das Event von einem großen Freiwilligen-Team des Fachbereichs BU, das am Abend auch für Brezeln und diverse Getränke sorgen wird. Für Ton und Technik sind erneut Studierende des Fachbereichs Media zuständig. Online-Tickets (10 Euro für Beschäftigte, 5 Euro für Studierende) sind ab sofort über Anny buchbar. Zusätzlich wird es an der Abendkasse ein kleines Kontingent an Resttickets geben. Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an alle Studierenden und Beschäftigten der h_da. Gerne können Sie auch Freunde und Bekannte mitbringen – nach dem Motto „h_da & friends“.

At the beginning of October, the ‘ATHENE Usable Security and Privacy Lab’ (USP Lab) began its work at h_da. The lab is run by the User-Centered Security working group and supported by the National Research Center for Applied Cybersecurity ATHENE. Researchers and students at h_da can use the lab for projects and studies on the usability of security and privacy related technologies. The focus lies on questions of how security and privacy technologies can be designed to support users in making informed decisions and effectively protect their personal data. This includes, for example, the comprehensible presentation of privacy policies or transparent cookie banners that openly explain which data are processed and in what form when using an application. Research into user behaviour is also of great interest, for instance regarding trust in AI tools and the information users may reveal.

The USP Lab has comprehensive technical resources and offers methodological support to investigate such issues, for example through usability tests on PCs or mobile devices, user interviews, surveys, eye tracking and more. The lab is located in building D19, room 02.12, and can also be used for teaching purposes. Researchers who are not members of ATHENE can request to use the USP Lab at any time. The laboratory website also provides detailed explanations and instructions. If required, the team will be happy to assist you with individual methodological consultation. The “Mensa” on the Dieburg campus has been renovated over the past few months and will be presented to the university community on Wednesday, 12 November 2025, with its new functions and uses.

The hall is now divided into three areas: the catering area continues to operate as a ‘classic’ canteen during peak hours, while food and drink vending machines provide refreshments during off-peak hours. A modular exhibition and event area with a stage offers space for exhibitions and presentations by students and degree programmes, and the area can also be used for events. There are also study and lounge areas for group work as well as individual workstations.

The renovation now allows for better use of the large building on the listed Dieburg campus. The ‘relaunch’ celebration with music and catering specials from the student union will begin at 12 noon on 12 November. You will receive a separate invitation by email.

The Utopia Europe Prize 2025 goes to h_da. On Tuesday, 23 September 2025, a team of students from our university took part in the nationwide debate competition ‘Utopia Europe’ at the French Embassy in Berlin and prevailed against two other teams. In the competition on the topic of ‘Participation and engagement: giving young people in Europe a voice’, h_da students presented the EUT+ project ‘Become a Member of the European Parliament for one Day’, which was one of the highlights of EUT+ Darmstadt Week in June. The results of the project, in the form of a resolution, will be handed over to a member of the European Parliament in the next step.

The team of h_da consisted of four students: Anna Valerie Smeljanski (Master's in Media, Technology and Society), Alexander Stümpel (Bachelor's in Business Psychology) and Sofia Naumi, with preparatory support from Anja Dinzinger (both Bachelor's in Information Law). They were supported and coached by Prof. Dr. Anja Hentschel, Prof. Dr. Andreas Haidvogl (both from SuK) and Dorina Kaiser, advisor to President Prof. Dr. Arnd Steinmetz. They had already been in charge of organising the event in Darmstadt.

During the debate in Berlin, the students explained their ideas, were questioned critically by moderators and had to respond. The jury highlighted the innovative concept, the interdisciplinary and international orientation, the combination of social science and STEM perspectives, and the change of perspective associated with the idea of the EUT+ project as particularly convincing. Despite the challenging times we are facing as a university, sustainable development remains a key focus at h_da. The Competence Centre for Sustainable Development (KNE), newly founded this year and headed by Sonja Kleinod, aims to further develop the university in line with the ‘whole institution approach’ – oriented towards the needs and issues of our stakeholders. This is supported by the departments of Education for Sustainable Development, headed by Julia Landrock, and Corporate Sustainability Management. The already established Green Office is now also part of the KNE.

In the new Green Office room in the foyer of the high-rise building on the Schöfferstraße campus, we want to make the topics and projects of h_da in the field of sustainable development visible and tangible. Come and see for yourself at the Green Office reopening on 22 October from 4 p.m. Experience the different ways the space can be used and the presentation of the pra:ne (prize for sustainable theses) for the 2024 and 2025 cohorts. A gallery walk will showcase the content of the award-winning theses. There will also be an opportunity to discuss the core content of the first university-wide sustainability strategy. Registration for Sustainability Day on 24 November is now open on the website of the Protestant University of Applied Sciences (EHD). This year's focus is ‘Exploring Social Sustainability! Ecology, technology and economics meet social issues’. Together, we will discover and discuss the interactions between ecology, technology, economics and social issues with a view to sustainability. Numerous initiatives and projects from the cooperation partners will be represented at a market of opportunities for networking. The specific agenda with lectures and workshops will be available on the event website from mid-October.

You may register on the EHD website with your email address to receive a reminder about the day, including the programme. The day is aimed at students, researchers from all disciplines, and practitioners, such as civil society associations and federations, social and health care organisations, welfare associations and church institutions. The event is once again being held in cooperation between the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt, the Technical University of Darmstadt, the Hessian State Agency for Civic Education, the Forum for Responsibility Foundation and the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt.

Following the great success of the first two Lab Nights, preparations for the third edition are in full swing: on Thursday, 6 November, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites you once again to the Water Engineering Hall (B13), which has been ‘converted’ into the wasserBARhalle. The programme includes short concerts with pianist Matthias Fenchel (photo), who was met with great enthusiasm at the first edition of Lab Nights, as well as the young crossover duo KlaVio from Wiesbaden (piano & violin), a horn quartet from Cologne and concert guitars. Unlike ‘conventional’ classical music evenings, we will be standing directly next to the grand piano or around the artists in the hydraulic engineering hall – a completely different kind of classical music experience!

The event is being organised by a large team of volunteers from the BU department, who will also be providing pretzels and various drinks during the evening. Students from the Media department will once again be responsible for sound and technology. Online tickets (10 euros for employees, 5 euros for students) can now be booked via Anny. In addition, a small number of remaining tickets will be available at the box office. The event is open to all students and employees of h_da. You are also welcome to bring friends and acquaintances – in keeping with the motto ‘h_da & friends’.
