Das „Town Hall“ Meeting in der Mensa Schöfferstraße am Montag (6.11.23) ist auf großes Interesse gestoßen: Knapp 100 Hochschulangehörige nahmen an dem neuen Diskussionsformat in Präsenz teil, rund 70 waren online zugeschaltet, um sich mit dem Präsidium über die „European University of Technology“ auszutauschen. Zum Auftakt gab h_da-Präsident Prof. Dr. Arnd Steinmetz einen kurzen Überblick über die bisherige Entwicklung von EUt+ und die in der ersten Förderphase erreichten Ziele.

„Was wir mit unseren Partnern vorhaben, gibt es so bislang nicht“, betonte Steinmetz: „eine wirklich europäische Institution, die transnational aufgestellt ist.“ Das Ganze sei eine massive politische Bewegung, führte Steinmetz weiter aus: „Die geht auch nicht mehr weg. Die europäischen Hochschulverbünde werden auf politischer Ebene als wesentlicher Gestaltungsraum für das zukünftige Europa gesehen." Als zentrales Thema für die zweite Phase von EUt+, die am 1.11. startete, nannte Steinmetz die Arbeit an neuen, unkomplizierten Mobilitätsformaten für Studierende und Mitarbeitende. Er thematisierte außerdem die sinkenden Studierendenzahlen (s.u.), auch sie seien eine Motivation für das Projekt. „Was wir hier machen, wird die Gesellschaft verändern“, fasste Steinmetz schließlich zusammen.

Eine gute Stunde lang hatten die Teilnehmenden vor Ort und im Chat nach der kurzen Einführung die Gelegenheit, Fragen zu stellen. Sie bezogen sich im Wesentlichen auf vier Punkte: die Freiheit von Lehre und Forschung, die künftigen Rechtsgrundlagen einer Europäischen Universität, die Frage der Nachhaltigkeit mit Blick auf die Reiseaktivitäten rund um EUt+ und schließlich das Thema Mehrsprachigkeit. Ein „Warm Welcome“ für die neuen Professorinnen und Professoren an unserer Hochschule: 13 der insgesamt 18 Neuberufenen waren am 10. Oktober bei der eintägigen Begrüßungsveranstaltung dabei, die Kolleginnen der Abteilung Personal- und Organisationsentwicklung organisiert hatten. Am Vormittag gab es im Senatssaal ein Kennenlerntreffen mit den Präsidiumsmitgliedern und einen „Marktplatz der Möglichkeiten“ zum persönlichen Austausch über zentrale Themen und strategische Ziele der h_da. Nach einem gemeinsamen Mittagessen erkundete die Gruppe dann die Campusstandorte Darmstadt, Dieburg und Mathildenhöhe, sprach mit Vertreter*innen der Fachbereiche, besuchte Labore und erhielt so einen ersten Eindruck von der Vielfalt an (Forschungs-)Themen an der h_da. Ein gemeinsames Abendessen im Schöffers bot zum Ausklang die Möglichkeit, sich informell weiter zu vernetzen und mit dem Präsidium auszutauschen.

Die gute Nachricht zuerst: Die Zahl der Erstsemester-Studierenden ist im WS 23 / 24 im Vergleich zum Vorjahr stabil geblieben. Aktuell sind 3124 junge Menschen im ersten Fachsemester an der h_da eingeschrieben. Die Zahl der Studierenden insgesamt ist allerdings rückläufig: Waren es im Jahr 2021 noch 16.180, so sind es heute nur noch 14.435. Dies sind zwar vorläufige Zahlen (Stand 31.10.2023), bis zum Stichtag Mitte November wird es aber erfahrungsgemäß nur geringfügige Änderungen geben.

„Die rückläufigen Gesamtzahlen entsprechen dem bundesweiten Trend, der die MINT-Studiengänge besonders stark betrifft“, erläutert h_da-Vizepräsident für Studium, Lehre und studentische Angelegenheiten, Prof. Dr. Matthias Vieth. „Die aktuellen Erstsemesterzahlen stimmen aber leicht optimistisch. Wir möchten unsere Gestaltungsspielräume nutzen, um künftig wieder mehr junge Menschen mit innovativen Lehrangeboten für ein Studium an der h_da zu begeistern.“ Dazu werden existierende Studienprogramme angepasst, innovative Themen aufgenommen und neue Studienformen angeboten. Neu ist auch die breite Palette der Angebote im Bereich Hochschulzugang und Studieneingangsphase. Hier bietet die h_da verschiedene Modelle für Orientierungssemester an, sowohl im MINT-Bereich mit hejmint und dem Hessen Technikum als auch in der Sozialen Arbeit mit DAS DORIS und im Fachbereich Gestaltung mit Start | künstlerisch-gestalterischer Orientierungskurs. Daneben werden Studierende aller Fachbereiche mit verschiedenen Angeboten durch ihr Studium begleitet. Hier ist u.a. der studentische Trainerpool zu nennen, in dem Studierende Unterstützung zu allen möglichen Fragen finden oder sich selbst engagieren können.

Das Engagement der h_da im Rahmen von EUt+ und die damit einhergehende weitere Internationalisierung der Hochschule bietet ebenfalls neue und attraktive Perspektiven für Studierende entweder hinsichtlich eines Studiums im Ausland oder aber durch "Internationalisation at Home", indem gemeinsam mit internationalen Kommiliton*innen studiert werden kann. Zudem sei es wichtig, so Vizepräsident Vieth, dass die h_da Projekte und Aktivitäten stärker in den Mittelpunkt rücke, die ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal darstellen. Dazu zählen beispielsweise die gerade erst vereinbarte Zusammenarbeit mit dem Technologie- und Gründerzentrum Hub 31 oder interdisziplinäre Projekte wie FaSTDa und GAUSS.

Zum Abschluss der ersten Förderphase von EUt+ hat h_da-Präsident Prof. Dr. Arnd Steinmetz die Technische Universität Sofia (TUS, Bulgarien) und die Technische Universität Cluj-Napoca (TUCN, Rumänien) besucht. Im YouTube-Video beschreibt er seine Eindrücke von der TUS und erläutert thematische Schnittmengen in Lehre wie Forschung. Labor-Sharing über europäische Grenzen hinweg: 19 Studierende unseres zyprischen EUt+-Partners Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) waren im Oktober knapp eine Woche lang zu Gast an der h_da. Die angehenden Elektroingenieur*innen hatten am Fachbereich Elektrotechnik und Informationstechnik die Gelegenheit, ihr Wissen in Laboreinheiten zu vertiefen, und erkundeten Darmstadt und das Rhein-Main-Gebiet. Am Ende der Woche äußerten sich die Gäste begeistert zur praxisnahen Lehre an der h_da, engagierten Dozenten und Fahrversuchen mit den campuseigenen E-Autos. Aber auch Jugendstil, Bier-Tasting und die erhöhte Schnitzelfrequenz in Deutschland kamen gut an.

Organisiert wurde die Intensiv-Woche von Prof. Dr. Thanos Krontiris vom FB EIT und seinem zyprischen Kollegen Prof. Dr. Petros Aristidou. Sie streben an, die Veranstaltung zu einem regelmäßigen Angebot auszubauen. „Wir haben am Fachbereich EIT Labore und Manpower, die andere Universitäten nicht haben“, erläutert Professor Krontiris. „Diese Ressourcen können wir stärker in unsere Hochschulpartnerschaften einbringen.“ Das Labor-Sharing mit den EUt+-Partnern ermögliche einen praxisnahen Wissenstransfer über europäische Grenzen hinweg. Zudem hofft der Fachbereich, so zusätzliche Masterstudierende gewinnen zu können. Einen ausführlichen Bericht und viele Fotos vom Besuch können Sie in unserem Wissenschaftsmagazin impact nachlesen.

Das Präsidium hat Prof. Dr. Jürgen Follmann zum Mobilitätsbeauftragten der h_da ernannt. Der Verkehrsexperte und langjährige, ehemalige Dekan des Fachbereichs BU soll als zentraler Ansprechpartner und Impulsgeber Projekte zur nachhaltigen Mobilität an der Hochschule voranbringen. Dafür ist eine Arbeitsgruppe geplant, an der sich – ähnlich wie bislang in der Mobilitätskommission – alle Statusgruppen beteiligen. Zu den konkret anstehenden Aufgaben zählen die Ausgestaltung der Parkraumbewirtschaftung und das Quartiersmanagement (gemeinsam mit der Stadt Darmstadt), der Ausbau des Leit- und Informationssystems, die Gestaltung der Freiflächen und der Bau neuer Radabstellanlagen. Dabei ist eine enge Kooperation mit Bau und Liegenschaften vorgesehen. Zudem sollen h_da-Absolvent*innen als Fachkräfte für eine Tätigkeit an der Hochschule gewonnen werden. 

„Wir benötigen Vertrauen untereinander, um die anstehenden Herausforderungen in Mobilitätsfragen anzugehen“, betont Professor Follmann. „Es wird nie eine für alle perfekte Lösung geben. Wir brauchen aber Kompromisse, die alle mittragen können, um Kernthemen der Zeit wie Klimaschutz, Nachhaltigkeit und Gesundheit gerecht zu werden. Deshalb wollen wir aktiv alle Gruppen an dem Prozess beteiligen.“ Mit attraktiven Projekten wie dem Radweg der Wissenschaften zwischen Darmstadt und Dieburg oder der Radschnellverbindung Darmstadt – Frankfurt will der Bauingenieur für alternative Mobilitätsformen werben. Innovative Ansätze zu nachhaltiger Mobilität seien in sehr vielen Studiengängen an der h_da zu finden, etwa im Industriedesign oder in der Logistik. Das FaSTDa-Team der h_da setze aktuell in der Elektromobilität neue Maßstäbe. „Dieses umfassende Wissen sollten wir als Hochschule für unsere eigenen Vorhaben nutzen.“

Der renommierte Hessische Film- und Kinopreis 2023 ist in der Kategorie „Spielfilm“ an „Vamos a la Playa“ von h_da-Professorin Bettina Blümler gegangen. Die Verleihung fand am 20. Oktober in der Alten Oper Frankfurt statt. Gastgeberin war die Hessische Ministerin für Wissenschaft und Kunst Angela Dorn. Im Publikum: zahlreiche Gäste aus Politik, Gesellschaft und vor allem aus der Film- und Kinobranche.

In „Vamos a la Playa“ begibt sich eine Gruppe Twenty-Somethings (Leonard Scheicher, Victoria Schulz, Maya Unger) auf die Suche nach einem verschollenen Freund auf Kuba. Der Film zeigt kritisch, wie sie aus ihrer eurozentrischen Perspektive mit ihren transkulturellen Kontakten umgehen. Die Jury des Hessischen Filmpreises zeigte sich beeindruckt „von der intensiven Schauspielregie, durch die auch die Liebe der Filmemacherin zu den Figuren deutlich wird, obwohl diese eher ambivalent bleiben. Auf eine reflektierte und betont erwachsene Weise werden Begehrensstrukturen deutlich, die sich nicht immer positiv auswirken. Dabei mischt der Film narrative und semidokumentarische Momente, illustriert das Geschehen mit subjektiven Videoblogszenen und bietet keine eindeutigen Antworten auf komplexe interkulturelle Fragen. ‚Vamos a la Playa‘ ist ein Film von internationalem Format, konsequent und originell inszeniert.“

Die Filmemacherin Bettina Blümner ist seit 2018 Professorin für „Fiction and Documentary Film“ im Studiengang Motion Pictures am Fachbereich Media. Sie führte unter anderem Regie in Spiel- und Dokumentarfilmen für Fernsehen und Kino. Ihr Spielfilm „Prinzessinnenbad“ erhielt 2007 den Deutschen Filmpreis. Der Chor der h_da sucht musikbegeisterte Sängerinnen und Sänger. Das Ensemble probt einmal pro Woche jeweils dienstags von 19:30h – 21:00h in den Räumen des Fachbereichs Soziale Arbeit in der Adelungstraße 51, Gebäude E10, Raum 2. Auf dem Programm steht eine bunte Mischung vierstimmiger Lieder aus Pop, Jazz und Klassik. Alle Studierenden und Beschäftigten der h_da sind herzlich eingeladen mitzumachen, Freunde und Familienmitglieder natürlich ebenfalls. In den nächsten Wochen steht eine Aufnahme für die digitale Weihnachtskarte der Hochschule auf dem Programm, außerdem wird das Ensemble beim Frühjahrsfest der h_da auftreten. Der Chor besteht seit Mai 2022 und hat derzeit 20 bis 30 Mitglieder, er ist das erste offizielle h_da-Musikensemble. Geleitet wird er vom musikalischen Tausendsassa Jan Hansen, der als Lehrkraft für besondere Aufgaben im Studiengang Informationsrecht tätig ist. Spaß garantiert! The “Town Hall” meeting in the “Mensa” (Canteen) Schöfferstraße on Monday (6.11.) met with considerable interest: Almost 100 members of the university took part in the new discussion format in person, and around 70 joined them online to exchange ideas with the University Executive Board on the “European University of Technology”. To start the meeting, Professor Arnd Steinmetz, h_da President, gave a short overview of how EUt+ has developed so far and of the goals achieved in the first funding phase.

“What we are planning with our partners has never been done before,” Steinmetz was keen to stress: “A truly European institution with a transnational set-up.” The entire endeavour is a huge political exercise, Steinmetz continued: “And it’s here to stay.” He added that policymakers also see the European university alliances as a “quintessential space for shaping Europe’s future.” As a key topic for the second phase of EUt+, which started on 1 November, Steinmetz highlighted the work currently underway to create new, unbureaucratic mobility formats for students and staff. He also addressed the decline in student numbers (see below), saying that this is also a source of motivation for the project. “What we are doing here will change society,” concluded Steinmetz.

For a good hour after the short introduction, the participants on site and online had the opportunity to ask questions. These mostly centred on four points: freedom of teaching and research, the future legal framework for a European University, the question of sustainability vis-à-vis travelling in conjunction with EUt+, and finally the topic of multilingualism and English language proficiency. Our new professors at h_da have received a warm welcome. 13 of 18 newly appointed professors were present at the Welcome Day organised by colleagues from the Department of Personnel and Organisational Development on 10 October. In the morning in the Senate Meeting Room, the participants got to know the members of the University Executive Board and attended a “Marketplace of Opportunities” for face-to-face discussion of central topics and strategic objectives of the university. After eating lunch together, the attendees explored the campuses at Darmstadt, Dieburg and Mathildenhöhe, spoke with representatives of the faculties and visited labs, thus gaining a first impression of the wide variety of (research) topics at h_da. The group ate dinner in the “Schöffers” cafeteria, finishing off the day with a chance to continue informal networking and chat with the Executive Board.

First the good news: Compared to the previous year, the number of new students in the 2023/24 winter semester has remained stable. 3,124 young people are currently enrolled in the first semester of their study programme at h_da. The number of students overall, however, has continued to see a downward trend: While the total number of students in 2021 was 16,190, today there are only 14,435. Although these figures (as per 31.10.2023) are still provisional, we know from experience that only minimal adjustments are to be expected by the cut-off date in mid-November.

“The drop in the overall figures reflects the nationwide trend, which is having a particularly strong impact on STEM study programmes,” explains Professor Matthias Vieth, Vice President for Teaching, Learning and Collegiate Affairs at h_da. “However, the current numbers of new students are enabling us to be slightly optimistic. We want to make full use of the potential at our disposal to inspire more young people to study at h_da in the future by offering innovative courses.” To this end, the university is in the process of realigning existing study programmes, introducing innovative topics and offering new study formats. Also new is the university’s broad portfolio for prospective students and freshers, including various models for orientation semesters, both in the STEM subjects with the hejmint  programme and Hessen Technikum, a scheme that combines taster studies and work experience, and in social work with DAS DORIS, an orientation year for social occupations, as well as at the Faculty of Design with Start|, an orientation course for artistic and creative professions. In addition, there are various services to support students from all faculties throughout their studies. These include, among other things, the Student Trainer Pool, where students can find help with all kinds of questions or become actively involved themselves.

h_da’s participation in the EUt+ initiative, together with the further internationalisation of the university that accompanies it, also offers new and attractive opportunities for students, either for studying abroad or in the framework of Internationalisation@home, where they can study together with fellow students from other countries. It is also important, says Vice President Vieth, for h_da to bring those projects and activities more sharply into focus that represent unique selling points, such as the collaboration recently agreed with the Hub 31 technology centre and incubator as well as interdisciplinary projects such as FaSTDa and GAUSS. 

At the end of the first funding phase of EUt+, Professor Arnd Steinmetz, h_da President, visited the Technical University of Sofia (TUS, Bulgaria) and the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (TUCN, Romania). Sharing labs across European borders: In October, h_da hosted 19 students from Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), our Cypriot EUt+ partner, for almost a week. The prospective electrical engineers were able to expand their knowledge through lab work at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology and also had the opportunity to explore Darmstadt and the Rhine-Main region. At the end of the week, the guests said how impressed they were by h_da’s practice-oriented teaching and its highly motivated lecturers and how much they had enjoyed the test drives with the campus’s own e-cars. But Art Nouveau, beer tasting and the German love of schnitzel also went down well!

The week of activities was organised by Professor Thanos Krontiris from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology and his Cypriot colleague Professor Petros Aristidou. Their aim is to expand the programme into a regular event. “We have labs and staff at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology that other universities don’t have,” explains Professor Krontiris. “These resources can be integrated into our university partnerships on a greater scale.” Sharing labs with the EUt+ partners makes it possible to transfer knowledge across European borders in a practical way, he adds. The University Executive Board has appointed Professor Jürgen Follmann as h_da’s Mobility Officer. The aim is for Professor Follmann, civil engineer, transport expert and former long-standing dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, to accelerate sustainable mobility projects as the university’s central contact person and catalyst for new ideas. For this purpose, h_da is planning to set up a working group in which – like so far in the Mobility Commission – all status groups are represented. Among the upcoming tasks are the organisation of parking management and neighbourhood management (together with the City of Darmstadt), upgrading of the signage and information system, design of open spaces and construction of new bicycle parking facilities. Here, the working group will work closely with the Construction and Real Estate Department. In addition, h_da graduates are to be recruited as specialists to work at the university. 

“To tackle the mobility challenges ahead, we must have faith in each other,” emphasises Professor Follmann. “There will never be one perfect solution for everyone. But to do justice to key issues of our times, such as climate protection, sustainability and health, we need compromises that everyone can go along with. That is why we want to actively involve all groups in the process.” With attractive projects such as the “Science Cycle Route” between Darmstadt and Dieburg or the “Darmstadt-Frankfurt Cycle Highway”, he wants to make the case for alternative forms of mobility. Innovative approaches to sustainable mobility can be found in many of h_da’s study programmes, for example in Industrial Design or Logistics. h_da’s FaSTDa team is currently setting new standards in electromobility. “As a university, we should use this extensive know-how for our own projects.”

The prestigious Hessian Film and Cinema Award 2023 was awarded to "Vamos a la Playa" by h_da professor Bettina Blümler in the "Motion Picture" category. The award ceremony took place on 20 October at the Alte Oper Frankfurt. It was hosted by the Hessian Minister for Science and Art, Angela Dorn. In the audience: numerous guests from politics, society and above all from the film and cinema industry.

In "Vamos a la Playa", a group of twenty-somethings (Leonard Scheicher, Victoria Schulz, Maya Unger) embark on a search for a lost friend in Cuba. The film critically shows how they deal with their transcultural contacts from their Eurocentric perspective. The jury of the Hessian Film Award was impressed "by the intense acting direction, which also reveals the filmmaker's love for the characters, although they remain rather ambivalent. In a reflective and emphatically adult manner, structures of desire become clear that do not always have a positive effect. The film mixes narrative and semi-documentary moments, illustrates the events with subjective video blog scenes and offers no clear answers to complex intercultural questions. 'Vamos a la Playa' is a film of international format, consistently and originally staged."

Filmmaker Bettina Blümner has been a professor of "Fiction and Documentary Film" in the Motion Pictures programme at the Media department since 2018. She has directed fiction and documentary films for television and cinema. Her feature film "Prinzessinnenbad" won the German Film Award in 2007. You can watch the German trailer on YouTube.

The h_da choir is looking for music lovers with a good singing voice! The ensemble rehearses once a week on Tuesdays from 19.30 to 21.00 at the Faculty of Social Work (Adelungstrasse 51, Building E10, Room 2). Its programme encompasses a colourful mix of four-part songs from pop, jazz and classical music. All h_da students and staff, as well as their friends and family, are cordially invited to join in. In the next weeks, the choir will produce a recording for the university’s digital Christmas card, and the ensemble will also perform at h_da’s Spring Festival. The choir, which was established in May 2022 and currently has about 20-30 members, is the university’s first official music ensemble. Choirmaster is musical mastermind Jan Hansen, a lecturer for special tasks on the Information Law study programme. Having fun together is the order of the day!
