Renée März ist die erste Doktorandin der h_da, die am hochschulübergreifenden Promotionszentrum Soziale Arbeit der HAW Hessen ihre Dissertation verteidigt hat. Die 29-Jährige forschte dazu, welche Bewältigungsstrategien Jugendliche anwenden, die beim Übergang vom anstehenden Hauptschulabschluss in die berufliche Ausbildung Schwierigkeiten haben. Betreut wurde die Nachwuchswissenschaftlerin von Prof. Dr. Yvonne Haffner, Soziologin am Fachbereich Soziale Arbeit, die selbst zu den Themen Bildung, Arbeit und Geschlecht forscht und lehrt und momentan fünf weitere Dissertationsprojekte betreut. Das hochschulübergreifende Promotionszentrum Soziale Arbeit ist eine gemeinsame wissenschaftliche Einrichtung der Hochschule Darmstadt, der Hochschule RheinMain, der Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences und der Hochschule Fulda. Im Januar hat der „BNE:Hub“ der h_da seine Arbeit aufgenommen und ergänzt damit das Nachhaltigkeitsteam im Ressort von Vizepräsidentin Prof. Dr. Nicole Saenger. Das Team soll dazu beitragen, Bildung für Nachhaltige Entwicklung in alle Bereiche der Hochschule zu integrieren. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt zunächst auf der Lehre.

Bildung für Nachhaltige Entwicklung (BNE) befähigt Menschen, zukunftsfähig zu denken und zu handeln, indem sie die ökologischen, sozialen, ökonomischen, kulturellen und politischen Zusammenhänge globaler Herausforderungen erkennen und aktiv an nachhaltigen Lösungen mitwirken. Dafür braucht es spezifische Kompetenzen. Genau hier setzt der BNE:Hub an. Die neuen Kolleginnen und Kollegen unterstützen Lehrende und Studiengangsverantwortliche „on the job“ bei der Neuausrichtung von Lehrveranstaltungen und Studiengängen.

Damit kommt die h_da auch ihrer Verpflichtung gemäß dem Hessischen Hochschulgesetz nach, BNE umzusetzen und zur nachhaltigen Entwicklung der Gesellschaft beizutragen. Verstärkung erhält der BNE:Hub durch Expertin Leonie Bellina (Bel Consult), die die Startphase bis zum Jahresende auch mit Workshops und Coachings für Lehrende begleiten wird. Der Startworkshop der Reihe „Zukunftsfähige Studiengänge: BNE erfolgreich umsetzen“ findet am 17. & 18. März statt.

Gut zwei Dutzend junge Menschen haben sich am ersten Orientierungssemester „hejmint“ der h_da beteiligt. Es richtet sich an Jugendliche mit Interesse an einem MINT-Studium oder einer MINT-Ausbildung und kombiniert ein Schnupperstudium an der h_da mit Einblicken in die Berufswelt. Bei der Abschlussfeier präsentierten die Teilnehmenden ihre Praxisprojekte mit wissenschaftlichen Postern und Social-Media-Reels. Fast alle von ihnen starten im Anschluss eine Ausbildung oder ein (duales) Studium im MINT-Bereich.

Die h_da engagiert sich mit mehreren Projekten am Übergang von Schule zu Hochschule. Ziel ist es, jungen Menschen mit unterschiedlichen Bildungsbiografien Orientierung zu bieten. Neben „hejmint“ gibt es den künstlerisch-gestalterischen Orientierungskurs „Start“ am Fachbereich Gestaltung, das Programm „Das Doris!“ für junge Menschen mit Interesse an sozialen Berufen und das inzwischen hessenweit etablierte „Hessen Technikum“. Schwerpunkt der EUT+-Arbeitswoche in Troyes vom 24. – 28.2.2025 war die Forschung. Die EUTINN-Gruppe, die sich mit Nanotechnologie und Nanomaterialien befasst, erhielt vom Research Committee die Empfehlung ans Rectors' Board zur Zulassung als „European Research Institute“ (ERI). Ziel der ERIs ist es, die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Forschenden, Studierenden und Unternehmen auf europäischer Ebene zu stärken. Auch die EUT+ „Data Science Research Group“ strebt den Status als ERI unter dem Namen EUT+ AII (EUT+ Artifical Intelligence Institute) an und organisierte in Troyes einen Workshop zu Machine Learning und Künstlicher Intelligenz. Die Gruppe arbeitet in ihrem ersten, groß angelegten gemeinsamen Forschungsvorhaben mit der European Space Agency (ESA) in Darmstadt zusammen (s. impact-Artikel „Ein kleiner Schritt für den Robo“).

In einem Workshop aus dem Bereich „Research and Research-oriented Education“ befassten sich die Teilnehmenden außerdem mit dem Thema Problembewusstsein zur nachhaltigen Entwicklung. Ein weiterer Höhepunkt der Woche war die Bewilligung eines gemeinsamen Projekts aller neun EUT+-Hochschulen mit Partnern in Spanien, Lettland und Rumänien, in dem es um die Förderung von Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen geht. Die EU fördert das Vorhaben drei Jahre lang mit insgesamt zwei Millionen Euro. Eine Zusammenfassung der Arbeitswoche in Troyes gibt es in Kürze auf der EUT+-Website.

Während der „Cartagena Week“ an der UPCT im Januar wurden zwei neue Initiativen ins Leben gerufen: ein Mentorenprogramm für Studierende im Bereich Entrepreneurship und ein Coaching-Programm für Lehrende zum Thema innovative Lehrmethoden. Letzteres basiert auf dem Prinzip „Train the Trainers“ und soll Dozent*innen an den neun Partnerhochschulen mit den pädagogischen Leitlinien von EUT+ vertraut machen, die auch bei der Entwicklung gemeinsamer Abschlüsse eine Rolle spielen. Zu den Kernideen zählen die Integration sozialer und technologischer Herausforderungen in die Lehrpläne, die Förderung aktiven Lernens und die Arbeit an Vielfalt und Inklusion im Hörsaal. In Cartagena wurde zudem das „EUT+ Incubation Programme“ gestartet, das Start-ups kostenlose Beratung und Mentoring bietet. Einen Bericht zur „Cartagena Week“ finden Sie auf der EUT+-Website.

Unter dem Motto „Hooray, we made a mistake!? – Fehlerkultur an der h_da“ hat das Team der Personal- und Organisationsentwicklung (POE) vor einer Woche zu einem 90-minütigen Online-Vortrag eingeladen. Kanzler Thomas Bartnitzki erläuterte, warum ein konstruktiver Umgang mit Fehlern nicht nur die Lernkultur, sondern auch die Innovationskraft an der Hochschule stärken kann. Insgesamt 135 Teilnehmende aus Lehre und Verwaltung waren dabei und brachten sich mit Fragen und Diskussionsbeiträgen ein. Am Ende waren sich alle einig: Der lebendige Austausch hat gezeigt, wie wichtig Offenheit, Reflexion und gegenseitige Unterstützung sind, wenn es darum geht, aus Fehlern zu lernen. „Ein voller Erfolg für die h_da“, bilanziert Kanzler Thomas Bartnitzki.

Über die Neugestaltung der Freiflächen am Campus Schöfferstraße haben wir in der letzten Ausgabe dieses Newsletters bereits berichtet (s. Newsletterarchiv im Intranet). Vom 23. April bis 15. Mai 2025 ist dazu nun eine Ausstellung im Foyer des Studierendenhauses geplant. Sie soll einen Eindruck davon vermitteln, wie der Wettbewerb abgelaufen ist und wie der Campus in den kommenden Jahren umgestaltet wird. Gezeigt werden die drei Siegerentwürfe mit umfassendem Bildmaterial und Erläuterungen.

Am Mittwoch, 9. April, eröffnet die Hochschule den „h_da Shop“ und lädt dazu ab 13.00 Uhr alle Studierenden und Beschäftigten ins Foyer des Studierendenhauses ein. Unter anderem können Sie an einer Verlosung von Shopartikeln zugunsten des Vereins für in Not geratene Studierende teilnehmen und erfahren, welche Rolle der Fachbereich Architektur bei der Entwicklung des Shops gespielt hat. Der Shop bietet Produkte wie Taschen, Hoodies, T-Shirts und Geschenkartikel an. Das Sortiment im Studierendenhaus wird größer sein als das Online-Angebot von www.h-da.de/shop. Es ging wieder hoch her in der Wasserbauhalle bei der zweiten Ausgabe der „Lab Nights“. Von virtuosen Klavierklängen, über zarte Harfentöne bis zu schrillendem Saxofon mit Live-Elektronik und DJ-Groove hatte das Programm alles zu bieten. Labor, mal ganz anders. Renée März is the first doctoral student at h_da to defend her dissertation at the inter-university Doctoral Centre for Social Work at HAW Hessen. The 29-year-old researched the coping strategies used by young people who have difficulties in the transition from secondary school to vocational training. The young researcher was supervised by Prof. Dr Yvonne Haffner, sociologist at the Department of Social Work, who herself researches and teaches on the topics of education, work and gender and is currently supervising five other dissertation projects. The inter-university Doctoral Centre for Social Work is a joint academic institution of Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, RheinMain University of Applied Sciences, Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences and Fulda University of Applied Sciences. In January, the ‘BNE:Hub’ (BNE = German abbr. for ESD) at h_da began its work, complementing the sustainability team in the department of Vice President Prof Dr Nicole Saenger. The team is intended to help integrate Education for Sustainable Development into all areas of the university. Initially, a particular focus will be on teaching.

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) enables people to think and act sustainably by recognising the ecological, social, economic, cultural and political interrelationships of global challenges and actively contributing to sustainable solutions. This requires specific skills. And this is precisely where the BNE:Hub team comes in. The new colleagues support lecturers and programme directors ‘on the job’ in the reorientation of courses and study programmes.

In doing so, h_da is also fulfilling its obligation under the Hessian Higher Education Act to implement ESD and contribute to the sustainable development of society. The BNE:Hub will be supported by expert Leonie Bellina (Bel Consult), who will also accompany the start-up phase until the end of the year with workshops and coaching sessions for teachers. The launch workshop in the series ‘Sustainable degree programmes: successfully implementing ESD’ will take place on 17 & 18 March.

A good two dozen young people took part in the first ‘hejmint’ orientation semester at h_da. It is aimed at young people who are interested in studying or training in a STEM subject and combines a taster programme at h_da with insights into the world of work. At the graduation ceremony, the participants presented their practical projects with scientific posters and social media reels. Almost all of them will go on to start an apprenticeship or a (dual) degree programme in the STEM field.

h_da is involved in several projects at the transition from school to university. The aim is to offer guidance to young people with different educational biographies. In addition to ‘hejmint’, there is the artistic-creative orientation course ‘Start’ at the Department of Design, the ‘Das Doris!’ programme for young people with an interest in social professions and the ‘Hessen Technikum’, which is now established throughout Hesse. The focus of the EUT+ working week in Troyes from 24 - 28 February 2025 was research. The EUTINN group, which specialises in nanotechnology and nanomaterials, was recommended by the Research Committee to the Rectors' Board for approval as a “European Research Institute” (ERI). The aim of the ERIs is to strengthen collaboration between researchers, students and companies at European level. The EUT+ ‘Data Science Research Group’ is also aiming for ERI status under the name EUT+ AII (EUT+ Artifical Intelligence Institute) and organised a workshop on machine learning and artificial intelligence in Troyes. The group is working together with the European Space Agency (ESA) in Darmstadt on its first large-scale joint research project.

In a workshop on ‘Research and Research-oriented Education’, the participants also focussed on the topic of problem awareness for sustainable development. Another highlight of the week was the approval of a joint project of all nine EUT+ universities with partners in Spain, Latvia and Romania, which focuses on the promotion of early career researchers. During the EUT+ week at the UPCT in Cartagena in January, two new initiatives were launched: a mentoring programme for students in the field of entrepreneurship and a coaching programme for teachers on innovative teaching methods. The latter is based on the principle of ‘train the trainers’ and is intended to familiarise lecturers at the nine partner universities with the pedagogical guidelines of EUT+, which also play a role in the development of joint degrees. The core ideas include integrating social and technological challenges into the curricula, promoting active learning and working on diversity and inclusion in the lecture theatre. The ‘EUT+ Incubation Programme’ was also launched in Cartagena, offering free advice and mentoring to start-ups. You can find a report on ‘Cartagena Week’ on the EUT+ website.

Under the motto ‘Hooray, we made a mistake! - Error culture at h_da’, the team of the personnel and organisational development department (POE) invited participants to a 90-minute online lecture a week ago. Chancellor Thomas Bartnitzki explained why a constructive approach to mistakes will not only strengthen the learning culture, but also the innovative power at the university. A total of 135 participants from teaching and administration took part and contributed numerous questions and contributions to the discussion. In the end, everyone agreed that the lively dialogue showed how important openness, reflection and mutual support are when it comes to learning from mistakes. ‘A complete success for h_da,’ summarised Chancellor Thomas Bartnitzki.

We already reported on the redesign of the open spaces on the Schöfferstraße campus in the last issue of this newsletter (see newsletter archive on the intranet). From 23 April to 15 May 2025, there will be an exhibition in the foyer of the "Studierendenhaus" (Building C 23). It is intended to give an impression of how the competition went and how the campus will be remodelled in the coming years. The three winning designs will be on display with comprehensive visual material and explanations.

On Wednesday, 9 April, the university will open the ‘h_da Shop’ and invites all students and employees to the foyer of the "Studierendenhaus" (Building C 23) from 1.00 pm. Among other things, you can take part in a raffle of shop items in favour of the association for students in need and find out how the Department of Architecture was involved in the development of the shop. The shop offers products such as bags, hoodies, T-shirts and gift items. The range of products in the "Studierendenhaus" shop will be larger than the online range at www.h-da.de/shop. The second edition of the ‘Lab Nights’ in the Hydraulic Engineering Lab (“Wasserbauhalle”) was once again full of colour. From virtuoso piano sounds and delicate harp tones to shrill saxophone with live electronics and DJ groove, the programme had everything to offer. There are more photos and a short review on impact.
