Am 1. Oktober hat Prof. Dr. Matthias Vieth vom Fachbereich Wirtschaft das Amt als Vizepräsident für Studium, Lehre und studentische Angelegenheiten angetreten. Er folgt auf Prof. Dr. Manfred Loch, der sich vor gut einem Jahr in den Ruhestand verabschiedet hat. Das Ressort wurde in der Zwischenzeit von Dr. Tanja Münch geleitet, die nun den Bereich Hochschulmanagement übernimmt.

Für seine dreijährige Amtszeit hat Ökonom Vieth insbesondere die Bereiche Digitalisierung, Internationalisierung und eine Flexibilisierung der Studienangebote im Blick: Ganz oben auf der Agenda stehen die Einführung eines digitalen Systems zur Stundenerfassung in der Lehre und ein „Studierendenkompass“, der jungen Menschen fachliche Orientierung geben, gleichzeitig aber auch Schnittstellen zu potenziellen Arbeitgebern herstellen soll. Den Bereich Internationalisierung, den die h_da insbesondere im Rahmen der Allianz EUt+ intensiviert, möchte Vieth durch mehr bilingualen Unterricht auf Deutsch und Englisch voranbringen und Studienangebote auch darüber hinaus in vielerlei Hinsicht flexibilisieren: quantitativ, qualitativ, zeitlich und lokal.

Bei alldem setzt der Betriebswirtschaftler auf systematisches Projektmanagement und konstruktiven Dialog: „Ich stecke nur dann Ressourcen in ein Projekt, wenn es ein Veränderungspotenzial und eine Veränderungsbereitschaft gibt“, betont Professor Vieth, der mehr als zehn Jahre lang in Leitungspositionen für Siemens und anschließend als selbständiger Unternehmensberater tätig war, im Gespräch mit der Hochschulkommunikation. Im Interview stellt er seine Pläne ausführlich vor.

Die erste Förderphase der Allianz EUt+ endet am 31. Oktober. Um nach den ersten drei Jahren Bilanz zu ziehen und Ziele für die kommenden Jahre zu definieren, kamen Vertreter*innen der beteiligten Hochschulen in der letzten Septemberwoche im spanischen Cartagena zusammen. Mehr als 120 Teilnehmende waren auf dem Campus der Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena dabei, viele weitere online zugeschaltet. Das Ergebnis: In verschiedenen Bereichen hat EUt+ in „Phase 1“ schon konkret Gestalt angenommen, beispielsweise mit gemeinsamen Vorhaben in der Forschung und stetig zunehmender Mobilität. Details hierzu, einen Ausblick auf die kommenden Jahre und Informationen zu unserem neuen Partner UNICAS finden Sie auf der EUt+-Website

Es bleibt noch viel zu tun! Wir möchten Staff und Student Mobility weiter ausbauen. Auch auf dem Weg zu den ersten europäischen Studienabschlüssen ist noch ein großes Stück zu gehen, hier werden wir in den kommenden Jahren intensiv mit unseren Partnern zusammenarbeiten. Für uns als h_da wird die größte Herausforderung darin bestehen, eine gemeinsame IT-Infrastruktur für alle EUt+-Hochschulen aufzubauen. Zu Beginn der zweiten EUt+-Förderphase ab November möchte das Präsidium intensiv mit allen Beschäftigten der Hochschule ins Gespräch kommen. Am 6. November 2023 laden wir Sie deshalb von 16.00 bis 17.30 Uhr zum EUt+ „Town Hall“ Meeting in die Mensa Schöfferstraße ein. Neben der Vorstellung der bisherigen Aktivitäten wird es einen Ausblick auf die nächste Förderphase geben. Zudem sind Sie herzlich eingeladen, Ihre Anliegen zu äußern und Fragen zu stellen. Wie im September-Newsletter angekündigt, möchten wir Sie heute ausführlicher zum Thema Studienfelder informieren. Wir starten im nun beginnenden Semester mit Studienfeldern zu drei Themen: Mobilität, Nachhaltige Entwicklung sowie Digitalisierung & Gesellschaft. Umfassende Informationen zu den einzelnen Studienfeldern finden Sie schon jetzt auf der Lernplattform Moodle. Eine Homepage geht spätestens Ende Oktober online.

Im Studienfeld Mobilität findet in diesem Semester die Veranstaltung „Urbane Seilbahn zwischen Darmstadt und Dieburg“ statt: Studierende werden hier bei der Planung einer Seilbahn mit technischen und planerischen Fragen konfrontiert – von den mathematischen Grundlagen über die Konstruktion bis hin zu logistischen Aspekten, Businessplänen und Fragen des Designs. Dabei bringen Lehrende der h_da aus den Ingenieurstudiengängen, aus Mathematik, Wirtschaft, Gesellschaftswissenschaften, Media und Design sowie externe Partner ihren fachlichen Input ein. Die Anmeldung ist über Moodle möglich. Ansprechpersonen sind Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Follmann und Thomas Marx vom FB Bau- und Umweltingenieurwesen sowie Studienfeld-Koordinatorin Sofia Trunov. Im Studienfeld Nachhaltige Entwicklung gibt es zwei Veranstaltungen: „Ingenieurtechnische Vorgehensweise für Nachhaltige Entwicklung“ und das Blockseminar „Sustainable Change Maker“. In der ersten Veranstaltung geht es um Grundlagen zum Thema Nachhaltigkeit: Wie können die „wicked problems“ unserer Zeit gelöst werden, welche Technologien brauchen wir, um die Sustainable Development Goals der Vereinten Nationen (SDGs) zu erreichen, welche Umweltfolgen gehen mit nachhaltigen Technologien einher u.v.m. Die Veranstaltung ist ein Wahlpflichtfach für die Masterstudiengänge Bau-, Umwelt- und Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen, für Kunststofftechnik, Allgemeinen Maschinenbau, Mechatronik und Automobilentwicklung. Ansprechpartner ist Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sven Linow vom Fachbereich MK.

Das Blockseminar „Sustainable Change Maker“ unterstützt Studierende dabei, ein eigenes Vorhaben für eine nachhaltige Transformation im Sinne der Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung zu konzipieren und umzusetzen. Das Modul führt in das Thema Nachhaltige Entwicklung ein und erläutert das Konzept der Planetaren Grenzen. In diesem Setting erarbeiten Studierende Lösungsansätze für konkrete Probleme. Dabei werden sie von erfahrenen Coaches begleitet, die ihnen Feedback und Anregungen geben. Das Modul vermittelt zudem Kommunikations- und Präsentationstechniken, um die Studierenden auf die abschließende Präsentation ihres Vorhabens vor einer Fachjury vorzubereiten. Auch hier erfolgt die Anmeldung über den Moodle-Kurs.  Ansprechpartner ist Koordinator Fabian Schäfer.

Das Studienfeld Digitalisierung und Gesellschaft bietet die Veranstaltung „Data Literacy“ an, die sich gezielt an Nicht-Informatiker*innen und Nicht-Mathematiker*innen richtet und keine Vorkenntnisse in Statistik oder im Programmieren voraussetzt. Der Kurs bietet eine allgemeinverständliche „Hands-on“-Anleitung zum Umgang mit Daten inklusive einer Einführung in die Programmiersprache Python. Themen der Veranstaltung sind Methoden der Datenanalyse, Zusammenfassen und Visualisieren von Daten, Zufall, Wahrscheinlichkeit und Prognosen. Anmeldung über Moodle. Am Ende des Semesters ist außerdem der Blockkurs „Computer Vision“ geplant. Die praxisorientierte Veranstaltung richtet sich an Studierende aller Fachrichtungen, die sich für das Thema Computer Vision, Deep Learning und KI interessieren. Ansprechpartner sind Prof. Dr. Elke Hergenröther (FB I), Prof. Dr. Andreas Weinmann (FB MN) und Dozent Viktor Kretzschmar.

Der erste Schritt ist geschafft, die Erarbeitung einer Nachhaltigkeitsstrategie für unsere Hochschule nimmt Fahrt auf: Im Sommersemester fanden Workshops zu den Bereichen Forschung & Transfer, Betrieb, Studium & Lehre und Governance statt, in denen Stärken und Schwächen, Chancen und Risiken für die einzelnen Bereiche identifiziert wurden. Die Ergebnisse hat die auf Nachhaltigkeitsfragen spezialisierte Darmstädter Agentur e-hoch-3 nun gemeinsam mit dem h_da-Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement analysiert und aufbereitet.

Zu den ersten Ergebnissen der SWOT-Analyse, die Sie hier nachlesen können, möchten wir Sie um Ihr Feedback bitten. Melden Sie sich gerne per Mail (nachhaltigkeitsmanagement@h-da.de) und nehmen Sie an einem der drei Online-Termine teil, um sich zu informieren und auszutauschen: 31. Oktober 13-14 Uhr; 2. November 11-12 Uhr und 6. November 13-14 Uhr (nur für Studierende). Eine Anmeldung ist nicht erforderlich. Die Termine finden über BigBlueButton statt. In der nächsten Phase werden dann Ziele und konkrete Maßnahmen entwickelt. Auch dies ist als partizipativer Prozess geplant. Wir werden Sie rechtzeitig über die weiteren Schritte informieren.

Heute, am 12. Oktober, starten wir eine interne Umfrage zum Mobilitätsverhalten. Das Green Office hat in Zusammenarbeit mit Expert*innen vom Fachbereich BU und dem Studentischen Projektbüro Verkehrswesen (SPV) eine Umfrage entwickelt, die auf der letzten Erhebung von 2019 basiert und in Zukunft alle ein bis zwei Jahre stattfinden soll. Ziel ist es, unseren CO₂-Fußabdruck im Bereich Mobilität zu berechnen und Möglichkeiten zu identifizieren, die Mobilität am Campus nachhaltiger zu gestalten. Ratend, laufend und werfend starten unsere Erstsemester morgen, am 13. Oktober, ins Studium: Das „Premiere-Team“ der h_da hat für dieses Jahr ein „Studi-Duell“ organisiert, das auf YouTube gestreamt wird. Alle Zuschauer*innen können im Chat mitraten und bekommen dabei wichtige Informationen und praktische Tipps zum Studienstart. Nach den erfolgreichen Premieren in den vergangenen drei Jahren mit vielen Tausend Aufrufen auf YouTube hat das Orga-Team vom Fachbereich Media gemeinsam mit der Hochschulkommunikation auch für dieses Jahr ein kreatives Format entwickelt. On 1 October, Professor Matthias Vieth from the Darmstadt Business School assumed the office of Vice President for Teaching, Learning and Collegiate Affairs. He succeeds Professor Manfred Loch, who retired just over a year ago. In the intervening period the post was filled by Dr Tanja Münch, who now takes over the University Management.

Professor Vieth is an economist and expert in business administration, and during his three-year term he is aiming in particular to enhance digitisation and internationalisation, and to make the courses on offer more flexible. At the top of his agenda is the introduction of a digital system for recording teaching hours, plus a “Student Compass” that helps young people when choosing their courses and at the same time is intended to create interfaces with potential employers. Matthias Vieth wishes to drive forward the processes of internationalisation, which h_da is intensifying particularly in the EUt+ alliance, by having more bilingual teaching in German and English, and also to make the courses offered more flexible in many respects, including quantity, quality, time and location.

In the face of all these tasks, Professor Vieth will be applying systematic project management and constructive dialogue. “I’ll only put resources into a project if there is potential and willingness to make changes,” the economist stresses, who followed more than ten years in management positions at Siemens by working as a freelance business consultant, in an interview with the University Communication. He sets out his plans in detail in the interview.

The first funding phase for the EUt+ alliance comes to an end on 31 October. To take stock of the first three years and define objectives for the coming years, representatives of the participating universities met in Cartagena (Spain) at the end of September. Over 120 representatives gathered on the campus of the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena, and many more joined online. They determined that during “Phase 1” EUt+ had already assumed a distinct form in several areas, with shared projects in research and continually increasing mobility, for example.

A lot still remains to be done! We wish to expand both staff and student mobility. There’s a long way to go to the first European degrees, and we will be working intensively with our partners on this subject over the next few years. The greatest challenge for h_da will be to establish a common IT infrastructure for all the EUt+ universities. This part of the work will be headed by h_da during the second funding phase. The University Executive Board is inviting all h_da staff members to an “EUt+ town hall meeting” in the Schöfferstraße cafeteria on 6 November 2023, from 16.00 to 17:30 h. With the second EUt+ funding phase kicking off in November, the Executive Board wishes to have an intensive discussion with university employees. The agenda will include presentation of the activities in the first funding phase and a preview of what can be expected during the next phase. As announced in the September newsletter, today we wish to give you more details about the new Study Areas. This semester we are starting with the three Study Areas Mobility, Sustainable Development, and Digitisation and Society. Full information on the individual Study Areas is already available on the Moodle learning platform. A dedicated webpage will be available online by the end of this month.

This semester, the Study Area Mobility is offering a module entitled Urban Cable Car between Darmstadt and Dieburg. Students working on planning a cable car will be confronted with technical and planning-related questions ranging from fundamentals in mathematics and the construction all the way to logistical aspects, business plans, and issues concerning the design. Specialist input will be provided by h_da teaching staff from the degree courses in engineering, mathematics, business, social sciences, media and design, and by external partners. Students can register for the course via Moodle. The contact persons are Professor Jürgen Follmann and Thomas Marx from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Study Area Coordinator Sofia Trunov. There are two classes in the Study Area Sustainable Development: Engineering Approaches for Sustainable Development and the block seminar Sustainable Change Makers. The first one is dedicated to the basics of sustainability: how can the “wicked problems” of our time be resolved, what technologies do we need to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), what consequences do sustainable technologies have for the environment, and many more besides. This is an elective subject required for the Master’s courses in civil and environmental engineering, and industrial engineering, for plastics engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics and automotive engineering. The contact person is Professor Sven Linow from the Department of Engineering and Plastics Technology.

The block seminar Sustainable Change Makers supports students in developing and realising their own projects for a sustainable transformation in the sense of education for sustainable development. The module provides an introduction to the topic of sustainable development and explains the concept of planetary boundaries. In this setting, students develop approaches to resolving specific problems. Experienced coaches give them backup in the form of feedback and suggestions. The students also learn communication and presentation techniques which prepare them for the final presentation of their project to a jury of experts. Here, too, students may register via the Moodle course. The contact person is Coordinator Fabian Schäfer.

The Study Area Digitisation and Society offers a course in Data Literacy which is deliberately aimed at non-computer scientists and non-mathematicians, and does not require any prior knowledge of statistics or programming. The course offers easily comprehensible, hands-on guidance on how to handle data, including an introduction to the programming language Python. It covers methods of data analysis, summarising and visualising data, random chance, probability and prognoses. Students can register via Moodle. The contact persons are Dr Sonja Hahn, Professor Sebastian Döhler and Alexander Siebert from the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Coordinator Viktor Kretzschmar.

In addition, the block course Computer Vision is planned for the end of the semester. This practical class is directed at students of all subjects who are interested in the topic of Computer Vision, Deep Learning and AI. The contact persons are Professor Elke Hergenröther (Department of Computer Science), Professor Andreas Weinmann (Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) and Coordinator Viktor Kretzschmar.

The first step is accomplished, and the preparation of a Sustainability Strategy for our university is gathering pace: in the summer semester, workshops on Research & Transfer, Operations, Studies & Teaching and Governance took place, in which strengths and weaknesses as well as opportunities and risks for the individual areas were identified. e-hoch-3, an agency based in Darmstadt that specialises in sustainability issues, has now analysed and edited these together with Sustainability Management at h_da.

We would like to ask you for your feedback on the first results of the SWOT analysis, which you can read about here (in German). Please contact us by email (nachhaltigkeitsmanagement@h-da.de) or take part in one of the three online sessions for more information and to exchange thoughts and ideas: 13.00-14.00 on 31 October, 11.00-12.00 on 2 November and 13.00-14.00 on 6 November (for students only). No prior registration is required. The sessions will take place via BigBlueButton. The next phase will be devoted to developing objectives and concrete measures. This is also planned as a participatory process. We will inform you in good time about the next steps.

Today, on 12 October, we are launching an internal survey on mobility behaviour. The Green Office, together with experts from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Studentisches Projektbüro Verkehrswesen (Students’ Project Office for Transport, SPV), has prepared a survey based on the last one (from 2019), and in the future it will be repeated at intervals of one to two years. The aim is to calculate our CO2 footprint in the field of mobility and to identify options for making mobility on campus more sustainable. We therefore hope that many of you will take the survey: Link to survey (in German).

Our freshers begin their studies tomorrow, on 13 October, with a “Students’ Duel” that involves guessing, running and throwing. The event, organised by the h_da Premiere Team, will be streamed live on YouTube. All freshers can join in the guessing games via the chat to obtain important information and practical tips for starting their studies. Following the successful premieres in the last three years that had many thousands of views on YouTube, the Organisation Team from the Faculty of Media and the University Communication have developed a creative format for this year.
